Adult Eduction Brunch: The Jewish Environmental Movement and Farming in Raleigh

Sunday, March 20, 2022 17 Adar II 5782

11:00 AM - 12:00 PMZoom

Our Sunday Morning Brunch Speaker Series continues on Zoom, so B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Brunch)! Join us on Zoom for our next Adult Education Brunch: Anya Gordon - "The Jewish Environmental Movement and Farming in Raleigh."

Presenters Anya & Arthur Gordon, and Bonnie Leach, will talk about their urban agriculture venture: The Well Fed Community Garden, which was founded in 2012 to grow produce for their downtown restaurant The Irregardless Cafe. Anya and Arthur are the majority owners of the property with 4 other couples, who are all members of Beth Meyer Synagogue. With the sale of their restaurant at the end of 2019, Anya and Arthur are exploring new directions that their urban agriculture venture may take.

Guided by the “Jewish Environmental Movement”, the Well Fed Community Garden may develop into a living Jewish farm, making practices that are thousands of years old relevant lessons for today. These practices do inform how we grow produce, share belongings, treat neighbors, observe the passing of time, celebrate and improve, care for plants and animals, and create a vibrant, welcoming community to all folks, regardless of race, faith or sexual orientation.

Jewish Community Farming is an effective and growing trend in North America. In a recent post, the new CEO of Hazon, Jakir Manela wrote "The Jewish Environmental Movement is clearly one of the strongest, most vibrant streams in Jewish life (in North America) today".

We welcome sharing our vision to nourish our community by transitioning the ‘Well Fed Community Garden’, at 1321 Athens Drive, into a place where we all can cultivate community, promote environmental sustainability and food justice, foster opportunities for meaningful spiritual engagement and personal growth, and strengthen Jewish life.
