10:00 AM - 12:00 PMSocial HallDr. Judith “Judy” Page (BMS member) will present “Margaret Walker: An African American Writer and Her Vision of the Promised Land.” This talk is based on a chapter of Southern Women, Southern Landscapes: Cultural Reflections on the Garden, 1870-1970 (forthcoming 2026) that focuses on African American writer Margaret Walker and her biblical vision of the southern landscape.

About our speaker
Judith W. Page received her PhD from The University of Chicago. A native of New Orleans, she is Professor of English and Distinguished Teaching Scholar, Emerita, at the University of Florida, where she also served as Director of the Center for Women’s Studies and Gender Research and as an affiliate of the Center for Jewish Studies. She is the author of numerous books and articles on British literature and culture of the 18th and 19th centuries, women writers, Anglo-Jewish writers, and most recently, women and the natural world. Her latest book, Southern Women, Southern Landscapes: Cultural Reflections on the Garden, 1870-1970 (forthcoming 2026), marks her first work centered in the United States. Page has been the recipient of several awards, fellowships, and grants, including from the Whiting Foundation, the NEH, the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, and the Chawton House Library in the UK. Since she moved to Raleigh, she has continued teaching through the OLLI program at NC State.
