Global Day of Jewish Learning

Sunday, November 17, 2019 19 Cheshvan 5780

12:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Words have power. They can create, they can harm or heal, they can explain or they can obscure. Even our silences can speak volumes. This year, communities around the world will join together to discuss words and their impact on our lives, using Jewish texts as a starting point for conversations. Explore the power of words by asking questions like:

  • Do words have the power to affect the world around us?
  • How can we learn through disagreements?
  • What can Jewish texts teach us about how our words can hurt others?
  • How is silence a form of speech?
  • What can we learn about our relationships from the names we use?

Hurtful Words @12:30PM
What can Jewish texts teach us about the ways our words can cause harm? In this unit, we will explore how the words we choose and use can affect those around us, whether or not we intend for those words to wound.

Leaving Memel - movie screening @1:30PM
Presented by Emily Finkelstein, community member – the film is about her family.
“Leaving Memel”, features our family’s story of escaping from Memel, Lithuania in 1939 just as the Nazis were about to annex Memel. Most people think of Lithuanian Jews and think of shtetl Jews as depicted in films like Fiddler on the Roof. However, in the film, my grandmother and her two sisters tell the story of a prosperous, urban family which had to give up everything to leave Europe in order to survive and the sacrifices that were made. The film also talks about the broader Nazi persecution of Jews in Lithuania with interviews with historians and other Lithuanians and concludes by drawing parallels to raise awareness about present day examples of bigotry and prejudice.

You may attend one or both sessions. For those attending the brunch in the morning, there will be a light lunch available for you during the break between brunch and the afternoon sessions.
