Sisterhood
Beth Meyer Sisterhood — Engaging Women at all Stages of their Jewish Journeys
Beth Meyer Sisterhood brings together Jewish women of all backgrounds to build community and connect in friendship. A member organization, Sisterhood empowers women to lead and steer the evolution of tradition at Beth Meyer Synagogue. Sisterhood members support each other in times of joy, challenge, and transition — their bonds are numerous and strong.
Sisterhood directs core operating activities at Beth Meyer Synagogue. Their flagship programs — Sisterhood Shabbat, Sisterhood Membership Brunch, Trivia Night — attract hundreds and grow members’ understanding and appreciation of Judaism and Jewish womanhood. Other aspects of Sisterhood’s work are oriented toward community-building and tzedakah:
-
Sisterhood organizes an annual mishloah manot (Purim gift share) fundraiser during the spring to raise funds for, among other recipients, Beth Meyer Preschool and the Naomi & Ken Kramer Religious School.
-
Before Rosh Hashanah and Purim, Sisterhood sends holiday-themed care packages to undergraduate college students to bring a sweet touch to their celebrations (email sisterhood@bethmeyer.org to add your college student to our list so we can send them goodies, too!).
-
Sisterhood runs the Judaica Shop at the entrance of Beth Meyer Synagogue — it’s chock-full of gifts for lifecycle events, Jewish crafts, and ritual items such as tallitot and mezzuzot. We give mezzuzot to teens on the occasion of them becoming b-mitzvah.
-
Sisterhood also runs an ongoing card fundraiser to benefit Conservative/Masorti institutions of higher Jewish learning, such as Jewish Theological Seminary, and their students. Email Marcie Novick for support sending personalized, beautifully illustrated greeting (e)cards to friends or family members — it’s a Jewish tradition to mark important occasions in the lives of our loved ones. Cards cost just $5, and the proceeds go to the Torah Fund campaign, the dedicated philanthropy program of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism (“Women’s League”). Indicate Beth Meyer Synagogue at check-out so that Beth Meyer Sisterhood will be credited for the sale. Women’s League offers commemorative pins to Sisterhood members who sustain Torah Fund with leadership gifts. We encourage all to join this tzedakah circle with a donation of $180 or more.
-
In 2024, Sisterhood launched a monthly, in-person book club for community members enthralled by contemporary Jewish storytelling. Readers meet on the third Monday of the month in our Library to schmooze and swap reflections.
-
Through the Warm Up America! program and other charitable initiatives, Sisterhood has donated time, goods, services, and financial resources to Triangle-area shelters, hospitals, pantries, and other nonprofit organizations. Our summer 2024 recipients were Transitions LifeCare and Myra's Angels.
