Jewish Life Cycle Events (three dates in July)
Study with Deborah Goldstein - awesome educator, BMS social action chairperson, and former BMS preschool teacher - in a series of three programs exploring the ritual and cultural customs associated with the following life cycle events:
- Birth (July 2). We all know about the bris, but do you know what a simhat bat is? What is a wimple? Why is your mother in law upset when you want to put the nursery together ahead of time? Are there prayers that are said during labor/delivery or nursing? All these questions and more will be answered during this session with Deborah.
- Marriage (July 9). One of the first blessings said on the birth of a baby is, "...may he/she be brought to the huppah...."What are the requirements and customs related to this most wonderful event?
- Death (July 16). With special guest Bonnie Leach, who will be speaking about the Hevra Kadisha). "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust..." We will all face death. What does Judaism have to say about death and mourning?
Wills: Don't Leave This World Without One (July 23). Learn with Donna Cohen, an attorney who focuses on estate planning and estate administration, as she teaches us the ins and outs of wills and estate planning. Whether you're 28 or 88, you probably should have a will!
Tai Chi (July 30). Join Hebrew tutor extraordinaire and tai chi instructor Sharon Mills as she guides us through the calming, fluid movements of the ancient art of tai chi. All movements are slow and gentle. Participants should be wearing comfortable shoes and have a water bottle handy. You may want to have a chair nearby to use for balance or resting.
Rugelach Rapture (August 6). Join our own star baker Greta Schiffman as she walks us through the steps to baking delicious rugelach. This will become your go-to gift for friends and family - if you can smuggle it out of your house uneaten!
Blast from the Past (August 13). Catch up with former congregant, religious school teacher, Hebrew tutor and Sisterhood Vice President Allison Checkoway as she shares her own spiritual and energetic journey from conversion to developing a closer relationship with God while expanding her personal energy for happiness and self-fulfillment. There will be time to schmooze as well!
