Yom Kippur Study Sessions

Monday, September 25, 2023 10 Tishrei 5784

2:30 PM - 5:15 PMChapel and Zoom

Enrich your Yom Kippur observance by learning something new. As is our tradition on Yom Kippur afternoon, Beth Meyer congregants will be offering learning sessions on a variety of Jewish topics. Each presentation is 45 minutes with a 15-minute break afterwards.

  • At 2:30 p.m., Will Brown presents “Sin Through Our Tradition’s History: Similarity is not Sameness”
Our Yom Kippur liturgy involves teshuvah (repentance) for sins — but has the religious concept of sin been consistent throughout Jewish history? Examine historical contexts and consider how these culturally contingent understandings of sin can inform how we think about Judaism and sin in the twenty-first century.
  • At 3:30 p.m., Henry Schaffer presents “Maimonides and his 8 levels of WHAT?!”
A lot has been written on this topic — both in Hebrew and in English. Does the English version do justice to the Hebrew writing and to what Maimonides intended? We’ll also dig into the meaning of each of the eight levels of tzedakah and Maimonides’ ordering.
  • At 4:30 p.m., Jonathan Wertheim presents “The Imperfect Among Us: Crypto-Jews, Transgressors, and the Obscure Origins of the Kol Nidre
Explore together the legends and folk beliefs surrounding the liturgy and formulation of the Kol Nidre.
