Yom Kippur Study Sessions

Thursday, October 2, 2025 10 Tishrei 5786

3:00 PM - 5:45 PMChapel and Zoom

.(Tickets are required and will be mailed to all members ahead of the High Holy Days.)

Enrich your observance by learning something new. As is our tradition on Yom Kippur afternoon, Beth Meyer congregants will be offering learning sessions on a variety of Jewish topics.

  • Mike Wagner will present “Shevuot 13a: For What Does Yom Kippur Atone?” Three goats were sacrificed on Yom Kippur: an “inner goat” (hapnima), a scapegoat (hamistaleah), and an “outer goat” (hahitzon). This session will offer a guided reading of Shevuot 13a, which discusses which sins are atoned for by each of these sacrifices. Click here for a handout.
  • Will Brown will present “Shades of Teshuvah: How Stories Shape Society.” Explore three different stories about teshuvah and how each story emphasizes different aspects of teshuvah. We will think about the power of stories and metaphors in shaping communities and relationships.
  • Deborah Goldstein will present “The Lizard in Your Hand: Confession vs. Repentance.” Take a deep dive into Ta’anit 16a:14, in which the comparison is made between one who confesses without atoning, and one who immerses in the mikveh holding a dead lizard. Click here for a handout.
  • Brian Orol will present “Rosh Hashanah: Awakening of the Soul.” The Zohar teaches that the High Holy Days are a time when the soul reawakens. How can we prepare ourselves to be ready for this spiritual moment and translate it into our daily lives?

Registration is only required if you will be joining by Zoom. A Zoom link will be emailed upon registration.
