Beth Meyer Synagogue Scholarships for Jewish Overnight Camp

We are pleased to be able to offer scholarships to Beth Meyer Synagogue families sending children to Jewish overnight summer camp in 5782/2022!  These funds are available for most Jewish overnight camp or immersive experiences (e.g., USY on Wheels) and we hope you will take advantage of this special privilege for our members.

Who is Eligible for Scholarship?

To be eligible, the following criteria must be met.

  • Student must be entering grades 3-12 and parent or membership unit is a member in good financial standing at Beth Meyer Synagogue for at least 1 year prior to application.
  • Students must attend Kramer Religious School, either in the K-8 program or the high school program.

What types of camp qualify?

  1. For a camp to qualify it should have and maintain status as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and be classified under sections 509(a)(1) or 509(a)(2) of the Code.
  2. The camp should be approved or sponsored by one of the five major Jewish movements (Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist or Renewal) or sponsored by a nonprofit Jewish organization or school.

If these conditions are not met, the camp should publicly advertise itself as a Jewish overnight camp AND meet two or more of the following criteria. 

  • Provide Shabbat services on Friday night and/or Saturday morning
  • Offer programs of Jewish content, such as cultural programs, Torah, Hebrew, or Israel awareness
  • Follow kosher dietary laws or provide kosher meals upon request
  • Be an approved camp by the Foundation for Jewish Camp

What funding is available? 

  • First-time campers may receive up to $1000/camper for camps longer than 18 days or $500/camper for camps 11-18 days.
  • Returning campers may receive up to $500/camper for camps longer than 18 days or $250/camper for camps 11-18 days.

The application period opens February 15 and closes on April 15. Families will be notified of award amounts by May 1. Priority will be given to first time campers. All funding will be contingent upon availability of funds and budgetary constraints. Checks will be made out to the organization, unless otherwise requested by the organization. Should the applicant be unable to attend the program, scholarship money is due back to BMS within 30 days of program start date.
